A client of ours shared an interesting story recently. 

At that time, it was the week when children were getting back to school. The client explained how she stressed over sending her daughter to school after a few months. She wanted her daughter to be really presentable for her classmates and teachers. So, the client did everything in her power to help the girl get ready for school.

But what is the point of the story?

You need to understand that whatever you focus on, that’s what you’ll attract. And there’s an even more important lesson from this.

When we want to be at our best and feel our best, we have to create an environment to enable us to actually be our best. It doesn’t matter if you are fifteen or fifty, the process is still the same.

If you don’t make sure to cover all the loose ends, you’ll get completely stressed out. And in the following sections, we’ll explore how to put your energy where it’s supposed to be.

Where We Put Our Energy Is Where Everything Flows

It pays to look at things from a business perspective and consider how most owners run their accounting firms.

They wake up in the morning and they’re like, “Oh, what do I have to do today?” Then, they realise they’re missing something and need to run an errand. It turns out, there’s no food and they need to grab whatever’s lying around. Or, they may run on coffee all day.

But what really happened here is that they didn’t prepare for the next day. Instead, they stayed up late watching Netflix and didn’t have a clue what to do in the morning.

You need to understand that the way you run your life and the discipline you have enables you to be successful at business. What’s more, you should have a routine already mapped out in your head. That is, know how to do your best and have the best possible day without any stress.

The idea is to put all your energy towards getting the outcomes that you want every day. And the way to do it easily is through planning and organising. It means consciously choosing where you want to put your energy.

You’ve Got to Get Laser-Focused

You can go out in the sun, spend ten minutes there, and not get burned. And if you think about the sun in general, it’s this great big thing. It gives off lots and lots of energy, but that energy is kind of scattered everywhere, all around the world.

So, in most places in the world, you can get a bit of sun whenever you want. You may even spend up to twenty minutes outside and won’t get burned and it won’t really affect you.

Now, imagine a laser. It’s not nearly as big as the sun but it’s pinpoint and all the energy gets concentrated in one spot. That’s why if you stayed in front of a laser for ten minutes, it would bore right through you.

In business settings, what we need to think about is how to be more laser-like than sun-like. But of course, you want those sun rays to reach the entire world. But when we’re super super-focused on something, it really makes an impact.

So, what is it that you have to be super-focused on to make an impact? What is it that you want to bore a hole into?

At Oompf Global, when we speak to our prospects and leads, they all say the same thing.

“I want better value clients!”

That’s great because it’s exactly what we do in the Momentum Program. We give you a laser-like step-by-step process to get high-value clients. But then, a lot of our future clients figure out there are a bunch of other things they have to do.

Some even believe they can’t pursue building a VITAL accounting firm because they have a lot of admin work. But the main problem is that they aren’t laser-focused. The silver lining is that we understand how to get you laser-focused and it comes down to three things.

How to Get Laser-Focused

Tip #1 – Figure Out What You Really Want

Do you want to grow your practice and truly become a VITAL accounting firm? Do you want more clients? Maybe you need better systems and practices?

These and other similar questions are the first part of our call when you apply for the Momentum Program. Many clients love the laser focus, but they feel they’re too busy to do it. We totally get that, but then you have to make a decision.

There are people out there who run huge businesses and are juggling thousands of things. And their secret to accomplishing such a feat is because they’re laser-focused on everything they do.

When you put your mind to it and have the discipline, there’s no reason you can’t do the same. Okay, you’ll need to make some changes and readjust your mindset. But that’s a small price to pay compared to the results you’ll be getting.

Tip #2 – Get Focused on a Short-Term Outcome

To start off in the right direction, you need to decide what outcome you want to achieve in the next seven days to six weeks. 

Once you’re clear on that, you can reverse-engineer and do what needs to get done to get there. And you need to think about that every morning, prepare for it, and remain focused on the actions that bring you closer to the goal. 

For example, Oomph Global’s focus about two years ago was creating the best program for CPAs, accountants, and bookkeepers.

We managed to do that and our founder wrote a book immediately after setting up the program. But she didn’t take a two-year sabbatical to write the volume. 

She went off to her friend’s place in Derbyshire and wrote the book in a few days, laser-focused on her task. There was no TV and no procrastination. She had bursts of writing, then a walk, then it was back to writing. 

This helped her author 30,000 words in three and a half days and get the book on Amazon in a couple of weeks.

This is the type of laser focus you need to have to attract high-value clients and grow your accounting practice.

Tip #3 – Question Your Current Area of Focus

Stop for a moment and ask yourself…

“Am I really focusing on what I want to have as an outcome?”

Chances are, you’re spending way too much time working in the business, doing things you shouldn’t be doing. This is stopping you from having that laser-like focus and preventing you from achieving the desired goals.

Some new accounting business owners might even be sitting there wondering where their next client is going to come from. Are you one of those business owners?

If so, your laser focus should be on the ten things you can do today to start conversations. This should be the first thought when you get up and the last thing you focus on when you go to sleep.

The same principle applies for established business owners who might not have enough clients, or have the wrong clients. Make a list of actions you have to take to get the leads you want and keep it before your eyes at all times.

But how do you make sure you get the leads to start the conversations in the first place?

At Oompf Global, we have a book and we get 100 leads every week by giving away the book. Then, we use our Facebook group to start conversations and we make sure to reach out to five people there every day. And we follow up with prospects even though they initially declined the offer.

These are just some examples of how to create a plan to focus on the things that really matter. Your business might struggle with things other than the clients. But, It doesn’t matter. The principle is still the same.

Come up with the actions that bring you closer to that goal, then keep repeating the strategy until you get there.

Aim, Focus, Shoot

Nothing is impossible if you put your mind to it. Yes, it might be tricky and demanding. But nobody said you have to do everything on your own. You have your team, maybe outsourcing partners, and you know who to ask for additional help.

So, you should actually stop working in your business and begin working on your business. 

This means doing everything in your power to get the focus that will enable you to target financial freedom and the life of your dreams. All the while you’ll develop an accounting business that’s bound to become a force to reckon with.
